Chinese Martial Arts

by   Posted on January 14, 2012 in Martial Arts

The primary chinese martial art is called 武術 (wushu).

From this comes 少林功夫 (Shaolin kung fu). 少林功夫 originates from shaolin monastery, where it is taught and practised by monks.

Shaolin has given birth to many other forms of martial arts such as 蔡李佛 (Cai Li Fo). 蔡李佛 incorporates both Northern and Southern techniques because of this a wide array of weapon techniques are taught in the martial art.

洪拳(Hung Ga) is another variation of shaolin that focuses on deep body stances, strong hand techniques and horse stances, it is thought to have been created by Hung Hei-Gun, a pupil at the southern shaolin temple.

詠春拳(Wing Chun) is a form that legend claims was founded by a woman  who fought with a warlord for her right to marriage. A correct Wing Chun stance is like a piece of bamboo, firm but flexible, rooted but yielding. This structure is used to either deflect external forces or redirect them .

龍形摩橋( Dragon style) this style imitates a dragon, the onus is on letting an opponent tire and evading rather than blocking blows, inner qi is channeled by a a hissing sound, designed to symbolise a dragon.

白鶴拳(Fujian White Crane)  The  style focuses on deep rooted stances, intricate hand techniques and fighting mostly at close range  as if to imitate a pecking bird. It is thought to be founded by a female martial artist.
