The philosophies of Shakespeare and Confucius concerning the stages of a man’s life go as follows:

Shakespeare:

Infancy: A baby unaware of everything

Childhood: The start of education. Still young and vulnerable.

The lover: In love, much more artistic than previously

The soldier: A sense of altruism and camaraderie is now developed, rash and ill-tempered.

The justice: Age has taught wisdom, he appreciates the finer points of life.

Old age: This person is growing weaker and is now losing status.

Death: This person has become a baby again, shortly before he passes away.

Confucius:

Young adult: A teenager, showing independence and still learning about their role morally and ethically in a wider sense.

Independence: By this stage a man should be able to support a family and be responsible for himself.

Maturity: By this point a man cannot change his ways, by now he should be able to reason things without empiricism, and have laid doubt to rest.

Spiritual Maturity: Here a man has removed all doubt, and possesses a new perspective on life.

Acceptance: By this age a person should be prepared to accept the inevitable of life.

Unification: Negative thoughts should not be present, withdrawing from the world may help with purifying negative thoughts.

The biggest difference is that Shakespeare’s model of thought suggests a cycle, Infancy mirrors Death, Old Age mirrors Childhood etc. whereas Confucius suggests we only improve with age as we attempt to reach higher levels of understanding. This may be because Shakespeare is trying to illustrate something for theatrical purposes whereas Confucius is attempting to teach his followers.

Phonosemantic compound characters make up the majority of all Chinese characters. They are formed using two parts, a phonetic radical and a ‘semantic’ radical. The phonetic radical gives the character its pronunciation and the semantic radical a clue to its meaning.

When Western countries first met the Chinese language it was assumed that each character was a pictogram, giving the character meaning. However in 1984 a book called “The Chinese Language: Fact and Fantasy” disposed of this myth and proposed the idea of phonosemantics.

Examples of phonosemantic Chinese characters include: 沐, 淋, 媽 and 菜.
